Celebrating Art and Nature: Montessori Students Create Mixed-Media Beehives
This September, Montessori students in 1st through 6th graders had a buzz-worthy artistic experience, working with Artist-in-Residence Veronica (Ronni) Shmauz on a special honeybee hive project. Each Tuesday over the course of four weeks, students explored the worlds of art, nature, and problem-solving through a hands-on, mixed-media creation.
Each student designed and built their own unique beehive. The project involved several foundational mixed-media techniques:
Texturing: Students applied joint compound to their wooden hive and pressed bubble wrap into it, creating the realistic, intricate texture of a honeycomb.
Coloring: After the texturing was complete, the hives were painted with vibrant colors.
Sculpting: Bees were crafted from yellow and black pipe cleaners, which were then either glued directly onto the hive or suspended on wire, appearing to buzz in mid-flight.
This collaborative project went beyond just creating beautiful art. Under Ronni's guidance, students learned valuable lessons in creativity and critical thinking by making their own decorative choices. They also gained a deeper appreciation for the vital role bees play in our ecosystem through discussions that accompanied the creative process.
The project culminated in each student taking home a personalized honey beehive, along with a better understanding of artistic processes and the importance of our pollinator friends. It was a sweet success, fostering a supportive and engaging environment for our young artists to explore their creativity.
Students in 4K through 6th grade have now begun their October Artist in Residence projects and are having a spooktacular time!
